Kammerzell House: Overall view
Architecture Library, Hesburgh Libraries
In 1580 the city possessed 3618 houses, with a population estimated at 22,000. The structure of the buildings remained medieval in type, with Renaissance details and decoration. The houses were either half-timbered or built of pargeted brick. Only a few have a gable to the street. All have steeply pitched roofs, with several levels of dormers. Oriels and overhangs enabled the first-floor area to be extended. The half-timbered Maison Kammerzell (1588) is distinguished by its richly carved dovecot.
