Saint Waldetrudis' Church, Herentals: Interior, nave and carved wooden pulpit
Architecture Library, Hesburgh Libraries
In present views of the church the pulpit has been replaced with a smaller one.
Dedicated to Saint Waldetrudis van Mons (ca. 612-688), Countess of Hainaut. Sint-Waldetrudiskerk is a fine example of Brabant High Gothic, its oldest parts being the lower part of the tower and the transept (14th century). The choir and nave were built in the 15th century. Inside is the retable depicting the martyrdom of Sts Crispinus and Crispianus, the patron saints of shoemakers and tanners, an outstanding work by Pasquier Borreman Passchier Borman (ca. 1509- 1537), his only surviving signed work. Among the numerous paintings are works by Frans Francken the Elder of Herentals; choir stalls and confessionals survived the iconoclastic fury.
