Commonpress was founded by Pawel Petasz in 1977. "Material Metamorphsis" issue compiled by Cracker Jack Kid (a.k.a. Chuck Welch, see Folder: 632-42). Presented in the style of a press kit with folder of pink handmade paper, 7 items found in folder pockets. 2 envelopes of handmade paper. Small envelope containing fragments of handmade paper with "EVIDENCE OF TRANSITION". Small envelope containings fragments of fabric with "MATERIAL EVIDENCE". US Half Letter sheet with collage by Cracker Jack Kid, and invitation to contribute to a postcard mail art exhibition. Sheet with letter from Lon Spiegelman regarding delays in production of Commonpress n.21. Unbound book featuring text by Cracker Jack Kid about the project, and reproductions of mail art by contributors. Notable contributors: Bakhchanyan, Vittore Baroni, John M. Bennett, Guy Bleus, Les Camer, John Chiaromonte, Buster Cleveland, Robin Crozier, Michael Duquette, Tania Erlij, Bill Gaglione, Rima and Valery Gerlovin, E.F. Higgins III, Ray Johnson, Graciela Gutierrez Marx, Mogens Otto Nielsen, Carsten Schmidt-Olsen, Carlo Pittore, Sheldon Polsky, Bern Porter, Bill Ray, Lon Spiegelman, Jaroslav Supek, Edguardo Vigo. Numerous instances of the "MATERIAL METAMORPHOSIS" logo (circular seal design with bird and postage cancelled wave as motion lines) rubber stamped in black ink. As part of the "Material Metamorphosis", contributors sent 2 square feet of old clothing they had worn. The handmade folders and envlopes in this project are made from pulp of all the fabric sent by contributors. Cover ornamented with rubber stamps in black ink: "MATERIAL METAMORPHOSIS" logo, and sender's return address. Rubber stamps in red ink: "Commonpress 47", "THIRD CLASS".
