Wiesbaden Synagogue: Overall view
Architecture Library, Hesburgh Libraries
Destroyed 1938.
In the Kristallnacht pogrom on November 10, 1938, Wiesbaden's large synagogue on Michelsberg was destroyed. The synagogue had been designed by Phillip Hoffmann and built in 1869. The building is a revival style and harks back to Venetian Italo-Byzantine with bulbous domes, inlaid walls and tracery. During the Third Reich, a total of approximately 1200 Wiesbaden Jews were deported and murdered.
